Nuclear Age Bangladesh enters nuclear age
Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 6 October 2023: The 'Fresh Nuclear Fuel' or Uranium of the first unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has been handed over. A new history was created in Bangladesh with the transfer of uranium on Thursday 5th October at 3 pm. Bangladesh entered the nuclear age through the historic commissioning of the heads of government of the two countries.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin were virtually involved in the uranium transfer ceremony. Besides, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grosso was also involved. Alesky Likhachev, director general of Russia's state nuclear agency Rosatom, was present in person to hand over the uranium. Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafes Osman accepted the uranium on behalf of Bangladesh.
The whole of Pabna was decorated around the uranium handover ceremony. Strict security measures are ensured in Rooppur project and Green City residential areas. Along with the national flags of Bangladesh and Russia, flags of various colors are adorning the project area.
Earlier on September 29, the first shipment of uranium from the first unit of the Rooppur nuclear power project arrived under special security of various law enforcement agencies including the army. On that day, the three highways of Ishwardi were closed for traffic. Eager locals cheered at roadside shops, roofs of houses and the fleet of uranium-carrying vehicles passing by the highway from a distance.
The election manifesto of Awami League in the 2008 National Parliament election was the construction of Rooppur nuclear power plant. Awami League has been in state power for almost 15 years in three terms. In 2013, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project. After many ups and downs, the dream Rooppur nuclear power project has now become a reality. As a result of the construction of the most expensive project in the country, the Awami League government fulfilled another election manifesto.
Project director Shaukat Akbar said that 75 percent of the work will be completed in Rooppur this year. At the end of various preparation phases of nuclear power plant, physical infrastructure is created first. Nuclear devices are then installed within those infrastructures. After the construction of the physical structure, the work of installation of equipment is fast. In keeping with the pace of building physical structures, various machines have been developed in Russia. Work is going on in Rooppur by facing all kinds of obstacles. Work has not stopped here for any reason. The Rooppur project is being worked on keeping all international norms and protocols in mind.
