Bangladesh, France sign bilateral instruments on infrastructure, satellite system

Dhaka, Sept 11: Two bilateral instruments have been signed between Bangladesh and France to increase cooperation in various fields including infrastructure and satellite.

The document was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and French President Emmanuel Macron at Karabi Hall of the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka on Monday (September 11).

One of the two agreements is a credit facility between Bangladesh's Economic Relations Department (ERD) and France's France Development Agency (FDA) on the “Improving Urban Governance and Infrastructure Programme”.

The other is the Letter of Intent (LOI) between Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) and France's Airbus Defense and Space SAS regarding cooperation on the Bangabandhu-2 Earth Observation Satellite System.

Representatives of the Ministry of Finance signed the Credit Facility Agreement of €184 million agreement with the French Development Agency (AFD). It is aimed at supporting Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement in Bangladesh.

The French embassy in Dhaka said this concessional loan will help the Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement or UGIIP project, which will be implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron had a bilateral meeting with Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister's office. They discussed exploring new areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that there was a fruitful discussion with President Macron on all issues.

After the G-20 summit in India, Emmanuel Macron arrived in Dhaka on Sunday on a historic two-day visit. This is the first time a French president has visited Bangladesh since 1990. He will leave Bangladesh on Monday afternoon.
