Bangladesh: Gold found in bus, 12 detained

Dhaka, 27 November 2022 : Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation recovered about 637 loads of gold from two passenger buses in South Keraniganj of the capital.

12 people including Indian citizens have been arrested in this incident. They were arrested from Babu Bazar Bridge in South Keraniganj on Saturday (November 26). The market value of seized gold is around 5 crore rupees.

Shafiqul Islam, Revenue Officer of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate said this. The detained passengers are Rahat Khan (33), Mohsin Al Mahmud (29), Qazi Mamun (34) and Syed Amir Hossain (34), Shamim (23), Mamun (37), Bashir Ahmed Kamal (37), Mamun Sarkar. (37), Atiqur Rahman Meena (42). Besides, three Indian citizens are Nabi Hussain (46), Shahzada (47) and Mohammad Imran (37).

According to customs detectives, based on secret information, a team led by the deputy director of the organization Sanjida Khanam on Friday around 3 pm from Mazar Road (Gabatli) in Dhaka via Babubazar Bridge to Darshana-bound Purbasha Paribahan (vehicle number Dhaka Metro-B 15-3537) and Royal Paribahan (Dhaka Metro -B 15-3686) searched two AC buses.

In Chulkutia area of ​​South Keraniganj, the detective team of the Directorate of Customs and Investigation with the help of the police got inside the two buses and identified the suspect passengers. They were then taken to the nearby Jhilmil Hospital (Pvt.) Ltd. for X-ray examination. After checking the rectum of 5 out of 12 passengers and luggage handlebars of 7 passengers, money bags specially hidden in different parts of shoulder bags, a total of 7 thousand 432 grams or 637.17 loads of gold was recovered. But they did not get any valid documents to import or purchase these gold bars.

The estimated market value of recovered gold is around five crore taka. On preliminary investigation, customs detectives believe that the seized gold bars were being smuggled out of Dhaka. The accused are direct members of the gold smuggling ring. Preparations are underway to file a case against them.
