Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 7: Bangladesh has improved by 27 steps compared to the last year in the Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL), a global index related to digital lifestyle or the use and consumption of digital facilities in daily and social life.

Bangladesh ranked 103 in this index in 2021. Bangladesh has reached the 76th position in this year's index. That means Bangladesh has progressed 27 steps in one year.

The DQL index is managed by Surfshark, a virtual private network (VPN) service company based in the Netherlands. 117 countries of the world are included in the index. As a percentage of the global population, it includes 92 percent of the world's population. DQL index is being conducted since 2018.

DQL is guided by five fundamental sectors or pillars related to digital life. These pillars are e-governance, the ability of the general public to purchase internet data, quality of internet services, internet-related security, and related infrastructure. A country's position in the DQL index is determined by averaging the points obtained in these sectors.

Bangladesh's results in the e-governance sector of the index this year are the lowest. In this sector this year, Bangladesh's position is 86th. And the best result is in the sector related to people's internet purchasing power. Bangladesh's position in this regard is currently 29th in the world.

Besides, Bangladesh ranks 67th in the quality of internet services, 75th in internet security, and 85th in internet infrastructure. According to DQL, Bangladesh is in the 67th position among the countries of the world in terms of speed, stability, and growth of the internet.

There are mainly two types of Internet services used around the world—broadband connections and mobile. The quality of broadband connectivity in Bangladesh is quite good compared to mobile connectivity. The country ranks 78th in the world in terms of broadband services, and 115th in terms of mobile services.

However, India is far ahead of Bangladesh in both services. The mobile internet speed of this neighboring country is 25 percent higher than the mobile internet of Bangladesh, and India's broadband internet speed is 34 percent higher than Bangladesh's.

Internet quality in Bangladesh is moderate. According to Surfshark's report, "Internet services in Bangladesh are improving day by day, but more development is needed in this sector."
