Bangladesh improves rank in democracy index

Dhaka, February 4: Bangladesh has advanced two steps in the global democracy index. According to Economist Intelligence Unit, Bangladesh is now 73rd on this list.

The Economist Intelligence Unit has prepared this year's index with 167 countries and regions. Bangladesh scores 5.99 out of 10 in the index. Bangladesh was ranked 75th in the 2021 index. The score was 5.99. Bangladesh was ranked 76th in the 2020 index with the same score.

The index assesses the state of democracy in countries around the world in light of five key factors. The topics are electoral process and pluralism, effectiveness and acceptability of government, political participation, political culture and individual freedom. The index divides countries and regions into four categories. Full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime.

This year's index includes 24 countries in the full democracy category. 48 countries in the flawed democracy category. There are 36 countries in hybrid regimes and 59 countries in authoritarian regimes.

Countries with a score between 4 and 6 out of 10 are in the hybrid regime country category. Bangladesh is on top of all in this category. Mauritania is at the bottom of this category with a score of 4.0 zero three. Other countries in this category include Bhutan (84th), Ukraine (87th), Uganda (99th), Nepal (101st) and Pakistan (107th).

Countries in the flawed democracy category in this year's index include the United States (30th), Malaysia (40th), India (46th), Indonesia (54th), Sri Lanka (60th) and Singapore (70th).

On the other hand, Russia has dropped 22 steps in this year's democracy index. The country currently ranks 146th in the index with a score of 2.28, which falls under the authoritarian regime category. Russia was ranked 124th in the 2022 Democracy Index.

Norway tops the index. The score of this country in full democracy category is 9.81. New Zealand and Iceland are in the second and third position respectively. Sweden is fourth and Finland is fifth.

Afghanistan is at the bottom with a score of zero decimal 32 in this year's democracy index. The country's position is 167th. Other countries in the authoritarian regime category include Myanmar (166th), North Korea (165th), Central African Republic (164th), Syria (163rd), China (156th), Yemen (155th), Iran (154th), Saudi Arabia (150th).
