Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 20: Referring to Bangladesh as a country of communal harmony, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said this country was created by the blood of Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians.

'This country is yours, none of you will suffer inferiority. You are born on the soil of this country, you will resist if someone hurts you. We are by your side, Awami League will be by your side. The government is on your side.'

On the occasion of auspicious Janmashtami, he said these at the opening ceremony of Mahashova Yatra from Andarkilla JM Sen Hall in Chittagong city on Friday (August 19).

The minister said that this country was created in exchange for the combined blood of Hindus-Muslims-Buddhists-Christians under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Bangladesh is at peace. In a land of peace, everyone should always be on guard so that no one can destroy the peace by communal incitement.

The Information Minister said that Bangladesh was created to create a non-communal nation after coming out of the communal state system of Pakistan. But there are political parties in Bangladesh who capitalize on communalism and do politics. They give communal slogans during elections, abuse Awami League saying we are party of Hindus. We are the party of all people, Hindu-Muslim-Buddhist-Christian party of all people Bangladesh Awami League.

He said, "From time to time they try to destroy communal harmony in Bangladesh by inciting communalism. Our government has always suppressed these communal incitements with a stern hand. And you know those who give communal slogans, try to create communalism, and talk sweet words during elections. So please be careful about them when the time comes."

"When Durga Puja is held in Chittagong, if someone comes by plane or bus in this city, they can understand that a festival is going on here. It is not understood in other cities including Dhaka. That is why I am proud of the Hindu community of Chittagong. Because if we people of Chittagong have Tk 10, they borrow Tk 10 more and spend it. That's why our festivals are bigger than anywhere else.

Michael Dey, convener of the Janmashtami Mahashavayatra Celebration Council, presided over the function. Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League general secretary and former mayor AJM Nashir Uddin addressed the rally before the Maha Shobajatra. Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Krishnapad Roy, Janmashtami Celebration Parishad Central Committee President Sukumar Chowdhury, and others were present there as special guests.
