Bangladesh observes 45th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam

Dhaka, August 27: Today is the 45th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. He breathed his last on this day in 1976 at the then PG Hospital (now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University). The poet was buried with state honors next to the central mosque of Dhaka University. Today, the nation will remember with great respect and love the beloved literateur known as the 'Rebel Poet'.

He was born on 11 Joistho 1306 BS (24 May 1899) in the village of Churulia in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. His nickname was 'Dukhu Mia'. Nazrul was born to Kazi Fakir Ahmed and his wife Zaheda Khatun.

Although known as the Rebel Poet in Bengali literature, he was simultaneously a poet, musician, novelist, storyteller, playwright, essayist, journalist, filmmaker, singer and actor. He has created a variety of ragas and has elevated the statute of Bengali music.

Poet Nazrul and his family were brought to Bangladesh on 24 May 1972 on the initiative of the then President of Independent Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with the permission of the Government of India. He was given the status of national poet. For his contribution to Bengali literature and culture, the University of Dhaka conferred the title of D. Litt. on the poet at a special convocation on 9 December 1974. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak on 21 February of the same year.

Nazrul's consciousness and ideals are eternal in the life of Bengalis, unforgettable in the history of rising and falling struggles of Bangladesh. He fought all his life for the liberation of the exploited people. He was vocal against communalism, bigotry, superstition and myopia. To the youth he is the eternal symbol of rebellion.

On the occasion of the 45th death anniversary of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave speeches.
