Bangladesh: Police visit harassed woman's house with three accused

Dhaka, October 11, 2020: The investigation officer went to the house of a tortured woman in Begumganj of Noakhali with three accused in the case.

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) inspector Mamunur Rashid Patwari visited the woman's house at Joykrishnapur village in Eklashpur union of Patwari at 10am on Saturday. He was accompanied by three of the nine accused in the torture case, Badal, Abul Kalam and Saju.

More PBI officials were present at the time. While staying in the house for about 20 minutes, they toured the scene and the surroundings of the house. However, they did not talk to anyone.

Earlier on Friday morning, a team led by PBI Noakhali inspector Subhash Chandra Pal visited the victim's house. Police have been deployed at the house since the incident of torture was reported.

Meanwhile, the accused in the case, Mainuddin Shahed, was sent to court on Saturday after being interrogated in custody for two days. Investigating officer Mamunur Rashid Patwari appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court at 2pm.

The accused will be presented before the judge in the afternoon. Police officials have indicated that Shahed may make a confessional statement under section 164.

Earlier, Sohag and Russell, two accused in two cases filed under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act, had given confessional statements in court. The video of the woman being stripped naked after entering the house was spread on social media last week, causing an uproar across the country. The police then found the victim and took her into custody.

After that, the woman became a plaintiff in Begumganj Model Police Station under the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act and Pornography Control Act.

In the statements of the two cases, the names of 9 people were mentioned and 7/8 more people of unknown identity were accused. So far 11 people have been arrested in the two cases. Of these, 8 are accused.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) said. Alamgir Hossain said the two cases were transferred to the PBI as per the instructions at the police headquarters.

Mamunur Rashid Patwari has been appointed as the investigating officer in the case filed under the PBI Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act. Besides, Inspector Mostafizur Rahman has been made the investigating officer of the case under the Pornography Act.
