Dhaka, June 1: The first batch of Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine arrived in Bangladesh on Monday at 11:13 pm. A shipment of 1 lakh 602 dose of vaccine reached Dhaka from Gavi's COVAX facility on an Emirates Airlines flight. Dr. Shamsul Haque, Member Secretary, Vaccine Development Committee of the Department of Health, said that these vaccines will be kept in the cold storage of the expanded vaccination program in Mohakhali.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was scheduled to arrive in the country on a Qatar Airlines flight at 11:20 pm on Sunday, but Health Department spokesman Prof Dr Robed Amin told the Virtual Bulletin at noon that their flight schedule had not been announced and it could be a little late. Pfizer's vaccine arrived at 11:20 pm on Monday.

The Pfizer vaccine is coming from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), an international platform designed to ensure immunization in poor countries.

Gavi, which has been instrumental in protecting the lives of children in poor countries from deadly and contagious diseases, has taken the initiative to provide coronavirus vaccines to 92 low- and middle-income countries around the world. The international platform COVAX has been set up to ensure that poor countries receive vaccines.
