Bangladesh remembers Nazrul today

Dhaka, 27 August 2023 : The 47th death anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is Sunday.

On this day in 1976, he breathed his last at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (then PG Hospital).

Although Kazi Nazrul Islam is known as a rebel poet in Bengali literature, he was also a poet, musician, novelist, storyteller, playwright, essayist, journalist, filmmaker, singer and actor. He has created many diverse ragas and raginis and has held the Bengali music world in the seat of dignity.

Various social, cultural, political and professional organizations have taken various programs on the occasion of the poet's death anniversary. The program includes wreath-laying at Kabir's tomb adjacent to Dhaka University Central Mosque, Fateha recitation, doa mahfil and discussion meeting and cultural program. Bangladesh Radio, Television and various private television channels have taken the initiative to broadcast special programs on the occasion of the poet's death anniversary.

Regarding Nazrul's creations, Nazrul expert Professor Rafiqul Islam has written, Nazrul was a history and time conscious person, the influence of which is clearly found in his writings. The establishment of the Republic under the leadership of Kamal Pasha in Turkey, the socialist revolution in Russia and the wave of anti-British movement in India were largely covered by Nazrul in his literature. At that time he called for a revival of fanatical Muslims and in this he played the role of a strong leader.

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in Churulia village of Bardwan district of West Bengal in 1306. His nickname was 'Dukhu Mia'. Father's name is Kazi Fakir Ahmed and mother's name is Zaheda Khatun. Love, Betrayal, Communism and Awakening poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's poems and songs inspired the nation in the struggle against exploitation and deprivation. His songs and poems were a source of inspiration during the liberation war. Nazrul's poetry, songs and literary works created a renaissance in Bengali literature. He was a pioneer writer of secular consciousness. His writings played a major role in developing non-communal spirit in national life.

Soon after the independence of Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam with his family to the newly independent Bangladesh. He arranged his residence in Bangladesh with state status and provided a house for the poet in Dhanmondi. The National Poet was buried with state honor next to the Central Mosque of Dhaka University. Here he lies eternally asleep.
