Bangladesh's Covid-19 detection rate drops below 18 percent

Dhaka, August 19: The coronavirus detection rate in the country has dropped below 18 percent. In between Tuesday and Wednesday, 41,014 samples were tested for coronavirus, with 7,248 people returning positive results. The caseload has increased to 14,40,644 people.

The detection rate in the sample test in between Tuesday and Wednesday was 17.67 percent. Since the first patient was identified on March 8 last year, the overall detection rate stands at 16.91 percent. So far a total of 85,21,828 samples have been tested in the country.

The information was given in a press release signed by Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana on Wednesday (August 18). Earlier on Tuesday, the DGHS said that 39,278 samples were tested. The detection rate in the sample test was 19.18 percent.

During the aforementioned 24 hours, 172 more people succumbed to the coronavirus across the country. The death toll from the virus rose to 24,719. At the same time, 12,112 people have recovered. With this, the number of patients who recovered after being infected with coronavirus in the country stands at 13,27,028. The recovery rate was 92.011 percent.

Due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases, the government imposed a strict lockdown across the country from July 1. The restrictions were in force till August 10, during which time all government and private offices, courts, markets and shopping malls, shops and factories remained closed.

All types of public transport were also stalled.

However, public transports were made available from July 17-23 to facilitate people travelling to their ancestral homes ahead of Eid-al-Adha.

Earlier, the positivity rate has surpassed 31 percent, while Bangladesh consistently recorded over 200 Covid-19 deaths everyday.
