Bangladesh slash motorcycle registration fee by half

Dhaka, February 3:The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has issued a notification to reduce the motorcycle registration fee by almost half. A notification to this effect was issued on Tuesday (February 2) signed by Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Assistant Secretary, BRTA Establishment Branch, Road Transport and Highways Department.

Referring to the rescheduling of motorcycle registration fee in the public interest, the notification said that if the engine capacity of a motorcycle is 100 cc or less, the pre-determined existing registration fee will be Tk 2,000 instead of the previous Tk 4,200 and if the engine capacity of the motorcycle is more than 100 cc, it will be Tk 3,000 instead of Tk 5,600.

Earlier, the finance ministry agreed to a proposal by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to halve the registration fee for motorcycles.

A meeting titled 'Bangladesh-Japan Joint Public-Private Economic Dialogue' chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister on August 16 last year decided to fix the motorcycle registration fee within 10 percent of the market price. Earlier, the Japanese ambassador in a meeting with the industry minister proposed to reduce the cost of registration of motorcycles.

Recently, a letter of consent signed by Shabbir Ahmed, Deputy Secretary, Treasury and Debt Management Division (NTR-2) of the Finance Department, was sent to the Secretary, Road Transport and Highways Department. The letter agreed to reduce the registration fee for motorcycles in line with neighboring countries.

According to the letter, if the engine capacity of the motorcycle is 100 cc or less, the existing registration fee will be Tk 2,000 instead of Tk 4,200.

If the engine capacity of the motorcycle is more than 100 cc, the pre-determined existing registration fee will be Tk 3,000 instead of Tk 5,600.

According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), despite the limited traffic due to the coronavirus pandemic, customers registered 3,11,016 motorcycles across the country last year. In 2019, 4,01,452 motorcycles were rehave been registered in 2019.

In 2017 and 2018, this number was 3,25,876 and 3,93,585 respectively.
