Dhaka, August 10: The moon of the holy month of Muharram was not sighted in Bangladesh on Monday (August 9) evening. Therefore, the month of Muharram and the new year 1443 AH will start tomorrow, Wednesday (August 11). As a result, the holy Ashura will be celebrated on Friday, August 20 (Muharram 10).

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee at the meeting hall of the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram in the capital on Monday evening. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Nurul Islam. This information was given in the press release of the Islamic Foundation.

According to information received from all district administrations, Islamic Foundation head offices, divisional and district offices, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Space Research Center and Remote Sensing Center, the moon of Muharram 1443 AH was not seen anywhere in the sky of Bangladesh. Today, Tuesday (August 10) will be the 30th day of the month of Jilhaj. The counting of Muharram will start from Wednesday. For this reason, the holy Ashura will be celebrated in the country on Friday, August 20 (Muharram 10).

Muharram is the first month of the Hijri year. Ashura is a public holiday in the country by executive order. Shiites especially observe Ashura.

Ashura is known in our country mainly for the tragic event of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husain (RA), the grandson of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) in the desert of Karbala. However, in the history of Islam, the holy Ashura has come to light in some other significant events. The hadith mentions the special virtue of fasting Ashura (the day of Ashura and one day before or after it).

None other than the liberation of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and his followers from the hands of Pharaoh on the day of Ashura is proved by Sahih Hadith. The acceptance of the repentance of Hazrat Adam (AS) on the day of Ashura, the boat of Noah (AS) stopping on Mount Judi after the Great Flood and the birth of Isa (AS) are narrated from some of the Companions in unreliable sources.
