Dhaka, April 28: The Cabinet Committee has given approval for the production of vaccines in Bangladesh following the direct purchase procedure from Russia's Sputnik-V and China's Sinofarm.

Additional Secretary to the Cabinet Dr Shahida Akhter made the remarks in response to a question after a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs and Public Procurement chaired by the Finance Minister at noon on Wednesday (April 28).

She said, ‘How much money is involved in the production of this vaccine will be known later when the proposal comes to the procurement committee. Now only policy approval has been given. '

Asked if the two Russian and Chinese companies would produce vaccines by bringing samples to Bangladeshi companies, she said, "We have had detailed discussions with the technical and advisory committees we have and our policy makers have also discussed." Only then has consent been given. Activities will start soon. '

Dr. Shahida Akhter said that Bangladeshi companies are capable of production. The cost of producing the vaccine will be approved by the next economic committee. China has also talked about producing Sinovac. Both Bangladesh and China have agreed to produce it. It will be produced in Bangladesh as soon as possible. '

In this regard, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, "You know very well about the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health is slowly improving, we all have to admit it. There were two proposals today, one is to buy a vaccine. We also have to try from alternative sources. This does not mean that our first source has been canceled. But we must always have options in mind. As an alternative, Russia's Sputnik-V vaccine and China's Synovac are in talks with the two countries' agencies to take action.
