Bangladesh: Voice message to e used to update on flood

Bangladesh authorities to start voice message service to give update on floods in the country to highly prone areas.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Disaster Management and Relief at a workshop on 'Development of Flood Warning and Publicity at Local Level' at a hotel in Dhaka on Saturday (October 30th). Md. Enamur Rahman.

The state minister said the government is working to develop rural infrastructure and increase the income capacity of the poor, as well as forecast rapid floods through voice messages in high-risk areas. Training will be provided on early warning systems for flood mitigation in a more modern and scientific way. For this, training will be given to the disaster management committee at district, upazila and union level, he said.

The Minister of State for Disaster Management and Relief said flood information and advice would be made available to the general public immediately through integrated web-mobile applications, digital display boards.

He mentioned the experience of flash floods during his recent visit to North Bengal. Meanwhile, the state minister said it was timely to provide early warning of floods through mobile applications and automated technology.

According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, the project will be implemented in 19 upazilas of Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jamalpur in the north. The unions of these 19 upazilas which are most at risk of floods, especially Brahmaputra, Dharla and Dudhkumar in Kurigram district, Jamuna in Gaibandha and Jamalpur districts and areas along the Bangali river have been brought under this project.

Representatives of various national and international organizations including Local Government Engineering Department, Meteorological Department, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Department of Disaster Science and Management of Dhaka University, IWFM, IFAD participated in the workshop.
