Bangladesh wants more cooperation from Qatar in importing LNG

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 23: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proposed to give land to Qatar in the special economic zones of the country. She has also sought more support from the Gulf country in the energy sector, especially in importing LNG.

The Prime Minister sought this assistance during a courtesy meeting with Qatari Labour Minister Dr. Ali bin Saeed Al Marri at Ganabhaban on Monday (August 22) afternoon.

The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is establishing 100 Special Economic Zones. Qatar can acquire land in these areas for their investors and entrepreneurs to invest on a larger scale.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists.

The Prime Minister told the Qatari minister that China, Japan, India, and Korea have already taken land in the economic zone and are working to set up industries there.

Sheikh Hasina has sought more cooperation from Qatar in importing LNG. The Qatari minister expressed his country's interest in supporting Bangladesh in the energy and medical sectors.

The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is currently importing LNG from Qatar and we need more cooperation in this sector.

She said that Bangladesh gives special priority to relations with Qatar as a close brotherly country.

On the Rohingya issue, Sheikh Hasina said that since 2017, about 11 lakh Rohingyas have taken refuge in Bangladesh, which has now become a huge burden for the country.

The Prime Minister has sought help from Qatar in this regard and said that the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) is providing assistance to Bangladesh on this issue. Bangladesh has already relocated 30,000 Rohingyas to Bhasan Char.

Dr. Marri congratulated the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on behalf of the Emir and Prime Minister of his country.

He invited Sheikh Hasina on behalf of the Prime Minister of Qatar to attend the World Cup football competition.

Referring to the contribution of Bangladeshi workers to the development of Qatar, Dr. Marri said that currently four lakh Bangladeshi workers are working in Qatar, which is the second largest foreign community in his country.
