BGB member dies while chasing smugglers at Phulbari border

Dhaka, July 12: A patrolling BGB member named Mahbub Alam (31) died of cardiac arrest while swimming in the river to chase smugglers at the West Balatari border of Phulbari Upazila of Kurigram.

The incident took place in the Baromasia river near the International Boundary Pillar No. 931 and 932 of West Balatari village of Naodanga Union of the upazila around 8:30 pm on Tuesday. Mahbub Alam Lalmonirhat was serving as a soldier in Balarhat BOP under 15 BGB Battalion. He is the son of Abdul Gafur of Khalpara village of Panchagarh Sadar Upazila. She has an eight-month-old daughter.

Eyewitnesses said that three BGB members on patrol chased an unidentified smuggler. Seeing the dire situation, the smuggler jumped into the river with the goods. Soldiers Mahbub and Mizanur jumped into the river to catch the smuggler. Both of them swam the river and as soon as they reached knee-deep water on the other side, Mahbub fell ill.

At that time, the fellow soldier Mizanur grabbed him and started screaming save him, the locals came forward with a boat and rescued him and brought him to the shore. Later, with the help of locals, BGB members took him to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex in an autorickshaw, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mofazzal Hossain Akand confirmed the truth of the incident.
