BNP leader's brother arrested while leaving Bangladesh after embezzling bank money

Dhaka, February 18: Police have arrested Md Amjad Hossain Chowdhury, an accused in a bank embezzlement and money laundering case. He was arrested from Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on Thursday (February 17) at around 10:30 pm while fleeing abroad. Fifteen warrants, including embezzlement, have been issued against Amjad Hossain Chowdhury, brother of BNP central joint secretary general Aslam Chowdhury.

Sitakunda Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sumon Banik said, "Immigration police arrested him around 10 pm on his way to Dubai and handed him over to Sitakunda Police Station. He is currently in police custody. He will be taken to court today."

According to police sources, the fugitive had gone to Shah Amanat Airport last Thursday night to fly to Dubai. He was arrested on a tip-off with the help of immigration police.

According to ACC sources, a case was filed against Amjad Chowdhury on July 16, 2016 for embezzling Tk 325 crore 76 lakh 30 thousand 955 from AB Bank Agrabad branch. Besides Amjad, his brothers BNP leaders Aslam Chowdhury, Jasim Uddin Chowdhury and Jamila Nazneen Mawla were also accused in the case.

The money was embezzled in the name of Rising Steel Mills Limited, a family business. Amjad Hossain Chowdhury is accused in 15 cases including embezzlement of such money. Warrants were issued against him in 15 cases.
