Dhaka, December 28: The by-election will be held on the seats of the resigned MPs of BNP on February 1. Even though BNP MP Harunur Rashid submitted his resignation letter after a week, by-election polling will be held in Chapainawabganj-3 constituency on February 1.

On Monday (December 26), Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam signed the notification of the schedule in this regard. According to the schedule, the deadline for filing nomination papers is January 5. Selection of nomination papers on January 8. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is January 15.

On December 10, seven MPs of BNP submitted their resignations to the Speaker via e-mail from the Dhaka divisional mass meeting held at the capital's Golapbagh ground. They are Aminul Islam (Chapainawabganj-2), Harunur Rashid (Chapainawabganj-3), Zahidur Rahman (Thakurgaon-3), Mosharraf Hossain (Bogra-4), GM Siraj (Bogra-7), Abdus Sattar (Brahmanbaria-2), and Rumin Farhana (reserved seat for women).

The next day, on December 11, six BNP MPs resigned from the National Parliament. Seven MPs of BNP submitted their resignations on that day, but the Speaker did not accept MP Harun's resignation as he was abroad.

On December 18, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule of five constituencies (Thakurgaon-3, Bogra-4, Bogra-6, Chapainawabganj-2, Brahmanbaria-2) except the reserved women seat-50. It fixed February 1 as the polling day. All constituencies will be polled through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

On December 22, BNP MP Harunur Rashid submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Shirin Sharmin. On that day the seat was declared vacant by the Parliament Secretariat.
