Dhaka, December 12: Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said that by-elections will be held in the vacant seats within 90 days of the publication of the gazette of resignation of BNP MPs. He said this in response to a question from journalists at the Agargaon Election Commission building in the capital on Sunday (December 11).

EC Alamgir said that BNP's participation in the elections is a political matter. The responsibility of the commission is only to conduct elections. Despite BNP's demands, the Commission will use EVMs for the sake of fair elections. EC will work to regain the confidence of BNP in the neutral election. However, the commission will not resign on the words of any party.

The announcement of the resignation of seven MPs from the BNP party came from the Dhaka divisional public meeting at Golap Bagh in the capital on Saturday afternoon. Following this, seven BNP MPs submitted their resignations to the Speaker of the National Parliament at around 11 o'clock on Sunday.

Md Aminul Islam of Chapainawabganj-2 Constituency, Md Mosharraf Hossain of Bogra-4 Constituency, Golam Mohammad Siraj of Bogra-6 Constituency, Zahidur Rahman of Thakurgaon-3 Constituency and Member of Parliament Rumin Farhana of Reserved Women Constituency were present.

However, Chapainawabganj-3 Constituency Member of Parliament Harun Or Rashid and Brahmanbaria-2 Constituency Member of Parliament Abdus Sattar were not physically present as they were abroad.

Barrister Rumin Farhana submitted his resignation to the Speaker on their behalf. However, the Speaker did not accept the resignations of MPs Harun Or Rashid and Abdus Sattar as they were not physically present.

The BNP MPs, while coming out with their resignations, told reporters that there is no opportunity to speak on behalf of the people in Parliament. That is why they resigned from the 11th National Parliament to strengthen the movement to overthrow the government.
