Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 17: Lilly Nicholls, the new High Commissioner of Canada to Dhaka, has said that she will inform her government about the repatriation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's killer Nur Chowdhury, who has taken shelter in Canada.

The new Canadian High Commissioner said this was speaking to reporters after a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen at the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday (February 16).

The Canadian High Commissioner said, "The issue of repatriating Nur Chowdhury has been discussed. We understand this is an important issue for Bangladesh. I have promised the Foreign Minister that I will take up the matter with my government."

When asked about the Canadian government's position on repatriating Noor Chowdhury, Lilly said, "Our Foreign Minister will make an announcement on this. But I want to say that the issue is important for Bangladesh."

Later, Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen spoke to the media. Regarding the discussion with the Canadian High Commissioner on the issue of Bangabandhu's killer Nur Chowdhury, Dr. Momen said, "Canada has given shelter to Nur Chowdhury, the killer of Bangabandhu. The country should not be a haven for all the murderers in the world. I told the Canadians that Canada should not be give shelter to all the murderers in the world. Get rid of this bad guy by repatriating him to Bangladesh."

It has not been possible yet to bring five of Bangabandhu's killers back to trial. Bangladesh has inputs about two killers of Bangabandhu, Rashed Chowdhury and Nur Chowdhury, who have taken shelter in the United States and Canada respectively. But the government does not know the exact whereabouts the remaining three.

When asked about the progress of repatriating the killers, Momen said: "One of them is in Canada and the other is in the United States. Whatever efforts we can make to bring them back, we are continuing all those. Whenever we talk to them (ambassadors), we raise this issue."

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be visiting the UAE on March 8. Dr. Momen recently returned from a visit to the country before the Prime Minister's visit. During Momen's visit, the Prime Minister's visit was discussed. "There have been a lot of positive conversations with them," Momen said.
