Cancer detected in about 17 percent of the samples collected for diagnosis

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, January 6: The Department of Public Health and Informatics of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has released the results of a year-long study on pathology-based cancer registry and month-long hospital-based cancer registry. It found that 17 percent of the samples collected for diagnosis had been diagnosed with cancer.

On this occasion, in a seminar held on Wednesday (January 5) at BSMMU's Martyr Dr. Milton Hall, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed was present as the chief guest.

According to the Pathology-Based Cancer Registry, of the 21,175 samples collected for diagnosis, 3,589 samples (17 percent) were diagnosed with cancer. So that women (59.5 percent) have more cancer than men (40.5 percent). The major cancers in adult males are the urine bladder 10.2 percent, the prostate 9.9 percent and the oral cavity 8.5 percent.

The major cancers in women are breast 23.3 percent, cervix 21.5 percent and oral cavity 8.9 percent. The incidence of reproductive cancer is 11.2 percent in men and 31.9 percent in women. Among the diagnosed cancers, squamous cell carcinoma is 31.8 percent and adenocarcinoma is 31.2 percent.

Meanwhile, the results of the research on the hospital-based cancer registry showed that the total number of patients was 1,656. Among them 1,238 adults and 418 children. The major cancers identified in men are lung 9.6 percent, leukemia 9.4 percent and lymphoma 9 percent. Women's breasts account for 28.1 percent, thyroid for 16.1 percent and cervical cancer for 12.2 percent. The main cancers in children are leukemia (71.5 percent) and lymphoma (10.3 percent). The major cancers in children and girls are leukemia 66.5 percent and bone cancer 11.6 percent.
