Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 28 October 2023: Addressing the people of Chittagong, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "Today I have brought a small gift for you. It is a tunnel. Now it is Daijjar (sea or Dariya in the language of a region of Chittagong). Car will run underneath. There is no other tunnel this big in South Asia. Tomorrow this tunnel will be opened for public traffic."

She said these things at a public meeting organized by the South District Awami League at the KEPZ ground in Karnaphuli on the occasion of the inauguration of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel on Saturday, October 28.

The Prime Minister said that now there is no need to enter Chittagong to go from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar and get into traffic jams. The tunnel will be connected to the Asian Highway. Which will play a big role in the development of the country.

Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel built under the Karnaphuli River at 11:40 PM. After prayers and prayers, the Prime Minister's convoy left from the Patenga end of the tunnel to the Anwara end. Sheikh Hasina was the first person to pay the toll in the tunnel at 12:01 PM. Jhumur Akter, a woman worker at the toll plaza, accepted the toll from her. After the inauguration and toll payment ceremony, the Prime Minister's motorcade left for the public meeting organized by South District Awami League at KEPZ ground in Karnaphuli.

A letter sent on behalf of the President of China was read by Yao Wen, the country's ambassador to Bangladesh. A theme song was then performed to mark the opening of the tunnel. Besides, the prime minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of several other development projects of Chittagong at the public meeting ground. To commemorate the inauguration of the tunnel, the Prime Minister unveiled a commemorative postage stamp and released a note of 50 taka.

It is known that the construction of the tunnel was undertaken with the aim of connecting the two banks of the Karnaphuli River to build a 'One City Two Town' modeled on the Chinese city of Shanghai. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping laid the foundation stone of the tunnel project on October 14, 2016. On February 24, 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the boring work of the first tunnel tube.
