Dhaka, May 13: Li Jiming, the China's ambassador to Dhaka, said relations with Beijing would deteriorate if Bangladesh joined the US-led Quad. However, he has changed his tone two days later.

According to Foreign Ministry sources, Li Jiming called the issue a weakness of the English language and "out of context". According to him, he did not 'mean' what he said about the Quad. He didn't say any intention to make the relationship worse and spoke openly.

At a virtual event on Monday (May 10th), Chinese Ambassador Li Jiming said Beijing views the US-led coalition Quad as a "small group" against China. Bangladesh's participation in this will make the Dhaka-Beijing relations 'bad enough'.

After the statement, the Chinese ambassador was asked to explain. The ambassador then apologised for his remarks.

In this regard, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said at the State Guest House Padma on Tuesday that Bangladesh has not yet taken any decision on joining the Quad, a strategic alliance of the United States, Japan, Australia and India. The Chinese ambassador has spoken about this.
