Dhaka, January 9: Chittagong mayoral candidates have started campaigning ahead of the election. The mayoral candidates of Awami League and BNP, the two main parties in the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elections, started their official campaign on Friday.

While Awami League candidate M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury expressed hope for a fair vote, BNP candidate Dr. Shahadat Hossain called for a "neutral" role towards the administration and the Election Commission. Chittagong City Corporation elections were scheduled to be held on March 29 last year. But voting was postponed a week before the scheduled date due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The government appointed an administrator for the Chittagong City Corporation elections in early August as they could not cast their votes on time. Now the EC has the obligation to hold the election by February 5.

On December 14, Md. Alamgir, senior secretary of the Election Commission, announced a new date for voting in the Chittagong City Corporation on January 27.

Awami League mayoral candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury started his campaign by visiting the graves of his parents in Bahaddar Bari area of the city at noon.

BNP candidate Shahadat Hossain started his first campaign in Jamalkhan Cheragi Pahar area on Friday.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, “We are not obstructing anyone. There is no obstacle. Don't give up. EVM will vote. People will exercise their democratic rights. ”

Pointing to the BNP, he said, "There is a party but they do not see the good aspects of the government. They only complain and complain and talk nonsense. The team has become a decaying team. So he wants to live on straw. People are not confused by their words. People will make the right decision. ”

If elected, Rezaul promised not to increase the holding tax, to ensure health care at the ward level and to build a drug-free city.
