Colourful procession held in Dhaka on occasion of Janmashtami

Dhaka, Sept 7: Lord Sri Krishna's birthday Janmashtami was celebrated across the country including the capital Dhaka on Wednesday through various programmes including processions, discussion meetings, Srimadbhagat readings, evening aarti, kirtan, cultural programmes, subject-based seminars.

Hindu Dharma followers celebrate this day with the belief that Shri Krishna appeared on earth after lighting up the house of mother Devaki and father Vasudeva in the prison of Kansa in Mathura for suppressing evil and fostering discipline. On the occasion of the day, the procession started from Dhakeshwari temple around 4:30 pm on Wednesday. General Secretary of Awami League and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader and Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh inaugurated this Janmashtami procession of traditional religious people.

The procession passes through Palashi Mor, Jagannath Hall, Central Shaheed Minar, Doel Chatwar, High Court, Bangabazar, Nagar Bhavan, Golapshah Mazar, Gulistan Mor, Nawabpur Road, Roy Saheb Bazar Mor and ends at Bahadur Shah Park. During the Janmashtami procession, devotees participate in the procession dressed up in various parts of Lord Krishna's life, including the Chariot of Lord Krishna, the twin idols of Radha-Krishna, the prison of Kamsa, the Luv-Kush of Rama-Sita.

To take part in the procession, devotees gathered in Azimpur, Palashi Mor, Eden College Mor with trucks, minitrucks, pickups, horse carts, elephants from various upazilas around to participate in the procession. The whole area became a sea of people. Many children are seen riding on the shoulders and laps of their parents to take part in the procession.

Earlier, on the occasion of Sri Sri Janmashtami celebrations, the Mahanagar Puja Celebration Parishad organized a discussion meeting at Palashir intersection in the capital. Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader attended the meeting presided over by Manindra Kumar Nath, president of Mahanagar Puja Udjakar Parishad, and gave an important speech as the chief guest.

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council President JL Bhowmik, Awami League Central Committee Member Nirmal Chatterjee, Metropolitan Puja Celebration Council General Secretary Ramen Mandal and others spoke in the meeting. At that time, local member of parliament Haji Salim was present.
