Dhaka, January 9: The Postal Department has issued a commemorative stamp commemorating Bangabandhu's release day. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released on January 8 in 1972, after a long imprisonment of 9 months, from Milanwali Jail in Pakistan.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar on Friday (January 8th) unveiled a commemorative stamp worth Tk 10 and an opening envelope of the same value at the office of the official residence on Bailey Road in the capital.

At the same time a data card worth Tk 5 was also launched. Commemorative stamps, opening envelopes and data cards can be collected from the Philatelic Bureau of Dhaka GPO from Friday and later from other GPOs and major post offices in the country.

In a statement, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications said Bangladesh and Bangabandhu are an integral part of the thousand-year history of Bengalis. In the course of 24 years of struggle, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the great hero of the epic of thousands of years of Bengali history, had to spend most of his time in jail.

He said Bangabandhu's uncompromising leadership in establishing the independence of Bengalis despite facing death is rare in the history of the world. It was possible to establish the state of Bangladesh because one of us was Bangabandhu.

Referring to various historical contexts of Bangabandhu's release from prison, the Minister said, "On this day in 1972, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released from a Pakistani prison camp after nine consecutive months of imprisonment." Since then, the day has been celebrated as 'Bangabandhu's Release Day'.
