Dhaka, November 30: The Bus Route Rationalization Committee has proposed to build 10 terminals in the border areas of the capital Dhaka. The committee thinks that if the project is implemented, inter-district buses will not enter the capital. The buses will drop off the passengers at the designated bus terminal and leave for their scheduled destination. This will bring order in the city's public transport and reduce traffic congestion.

However, public transport experts say that the feasibility study should be done before the implementation of the project. They say that infrastructural development is not a big issue in this project, it is important to ensure its proper use. In particular, the police administration and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) have to play a leading role. Besides, it has to be monitored whether the buses are running properly or not, whether the passengers are getting service or not.

On September 9, 2018, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed a 10-member committee to rationalize bus routes to reduce traffic congestion in the Dhaka metropolis. The convener of the committee was the then Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Mohammad Saeed Khokon.

The committee then reviews the reality and appoints a consultant to report. The survey was conducted over a long period of two years. Later on November 10, the report was submitted at the 13th meeting of the committee at the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Nagar Bhaban. In this report, 10 new bus terminals have been proposed.

According to the Bus Route Rationalization Committee, the existing Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Gabtali terminals have a capacity of 1,500 buses. But now 9,298 buses are kept in terminal three every day. A few thousand more buses are parked on different roads of the city. This is a big cause of traffic jams. To get rid of this problem, the committee has proposed 10 new terminals in the border areas of Dhaka city.

These are: Kanchpur North (15.46 acres), Kanchpur South (27.71 acres), Baghair in Keraniganj (33.63 acres), Hemayetpur in Savar (36.50 acres), Birulia (14.53 acres), Gazipur (11.70 acres), Nabinagar-Chandra road bypile (40.40 acres), Kanchan area (24.24 acres), Atibazar's Bhawal (25.78 acres) and Bhulta (24.22 acres).

If this project is implemented, the existing bus terminals at Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Gabtali will be used for transport within the city.
