Dhaka, April 14: Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that those who are in conflict with Poila Baisakh believe in communalism. "This evil must be resisted," he said this in a brief speech before the procession organized by Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League at Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka on the occasion of Bengali New Year 1430 today.

Obaidul Quader said, "The spirit of non-communal harmony is Poila Baisakh. The main enemy of Bengalis is communalism. The branches of communalism are growing under the leadership of BNP. The evil forces must be eradicated. Only those who deny the spirit of freedom and liberation war do not celebrate Poila Baisakh."

He said, "This Poila Baisakh is part of the national cultural heritage of Bengalis. Even though it is late, it is being recognized internationally as a characteristic of our national cultural heritage. It is good news especially for Bangladesh, for Bengalis."

The bridges minister said, "We have not been able to celebrate the Poila Baisakh for a few years due to the Covid pandemic. Today we are celebrating the Mangal Sobhayatra at Bir Bahadur Shah Zafar Park. We have decided to take out the procession from here remembering the old tradition."

He said, Bangladesh Awami League is still associated with the history of the Bengali community and will continue to be in the future.

"These days are the address of our existence. We don't have time to look at who celebrated this event and who didn't. We will celebrate the spirit we believe in, the spirit that is part of our history, what we believe in," he said.

The procession of Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League started after Obaidul Quader's speech. The colorful New Year procession started from Bahadur Shah Park in the capital and ended at Bangabandhu Avenue.
