Own Correspondent, Dhaka, April 12: Construction of the third terminal at Shahjalal International Airport has progressed beyond expectations. Construction of this world-class airport has progressed 1.9 percent more than the expectation. It will be possible to inaugurate this terminal by September/October, 2023.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md. Mahbub Ali made the remarks while talking to reporters after inspecting the construction work of the third terminal of Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at Kurmitola in the capital on Monday (April 11).

The Minister of State said that once the construction of the third terminal is completed, it will be possible to overcome the infrastructural limitations in passenger services. By April 8, the construction of the third terminal at Shahjalal Airport was expected to be 32.7 percent complete. However, in reality its construction work has been completed 34.6 percent.

Noting that there is no problem in connecting the terminal entrance tunnel and elevated expressway with the work of the third terminal, the Minister of State said that coordination has to be done between these works. Work on the elevated expressway will begin in a few days, when the terminal will be connected to the expressway.

The Prime Minister has directed to extend the tunnel to Ashkona Hajj Camp. That will work accordingly. When asked by reporters whether the cost of the project would increase, the MoS said, "We will look into it. The cost of adjustment will be seen."

Regarding high fares to destinations in different countries including the Middle East, MoS Mahbub Ali said the issue has been discussed with the airlines. The problem of over-ticketing is slowly diminishing. It will come down further in a month.

In response to a question from reporters on how to prepare for the Hajj season, which would allow 30,000 to 50,000 Bangladeshis to travel to Saudi Arabia, the Minister of State said, "We will try to keep air fares at a tolerable level."
