After independence, Sheikh Kamal retired from the army and concentrated on his studies.

From his childhood, he had a keen interest in various sports, including football, cricket, hockey and basketball. He was the founder of Abahani Sports Club, one of the best sports organizations in the subcontinent and the promoter of modern football in Bangladesh. Sheikh Kamal became the first martyr of the infernal massacre on August 15, 1975. Although Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the main target of the massacre, his eldest son was the first to be killed in the incident. As soon as they entered the house, they saw Sheikh Kamal. Bazlul Huda immediately shot him with a stengun. Sheikh Kamal jumped out of the verandah and fell into the reception room.
