Country to set up 30 oxygen plants to tackle demands

Dhaka, August 5: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the purchase of 30 oxygen plants to meet the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will finance the purchase of these 30 oxygen plants.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal made the remarks in response to a question from reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday (August 4).

"30 oxygen plants will be procured. We will approve it in the next purchase offer. I will be able to tell the details in the next meeting," he said.

Eleven proposals were raised on Wednesday for the approval of the procurement committee. Of these, five were from the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, two each from the Ministry of Food and the Ministry of Industries and one each from the Department of Road Transport and Highways and from the Department of Secondary and Higher Education.

In nine of the 11 proposals approved by the procurement committee, the total amount is Tk 1,342 crore 80 lakh 2 thousand 176. Out of the total financing, Tk 910 crore 97 lakh 28 thousand 699 will be spent from GoB and Tk 431 crore 82 lakh 73 thousand 477 will be borrowed from World Bank and domestic banks.

Approval has been given to purchase 50,000 tons of non-basmati boiled rice at a cost of Tk 160 crore 22 lakhs 11 thousand 200. The Food Department has been approved to purchase 1 steel silo for rice storage at a cost of Tk 320 crore 23 lakh 49 thousand 40.

For the ppgradation of Jhenaidah-Kushtia-Pakshi-Dashuria National Highway to Kushtia Urban Four Lane, Tk 145 crore 49 lakh 86 thousand 13 has been  approved after re-evaluation.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries has approved the purchase of 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea fertilizer from Karnafuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) Bangladesh at a cost of Tk 111 crore 59 lakh 24 thousand 437.

Approval has been given for the purchase of 10,000 tons of phosphoric acid for TSP Complex Limited at a cost of Tk 57 crore 33 lakh 95 thousand 510.

The construction of multi-storey residential flats for government officials / employees at Mirpur Paikpara in Dhaka has been approved at a cost of Tk 164 crore 71 lakh 87 thousand 882.
