Dhaka, 23 July 2023 : Housing for climate refugees has been constructed under the 'extraordinary' shelter project with various facilities in Sadar's Khurooshkul in Cox's Bazar.

There is no information about the existence of such a large shelter project in the world, said the project officials.

People living there are trying to become self-reliant in the project area. The beneficiaries said that they have become destitute due to severe natural calamities like storms and floods. The government stands by them. It was difficult for them to survive without shelter here.

Those associated with the Khurooshkul special shelter project said that Bangladesh is one of the countries affected by the adverse effects of global climate change.

Floods, cyclones, river erosion and tidal surges are daily natural disasters in Bangladesh, which cause extensive damage to human life and property. People of Bangladesh lose their valuable property every year due to these natural disasters. After independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the first initiative to rehabilitate the landless, homeless, uprooted and destitute people of the country.

He included in Article 15(a) of the Constitution of Bangladesh the right of every citizen of the country to claim their domicile.

They said that in 1997, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took up the shelter project with the aim of rehabilitating the landless, homeless, uprooted and destitute people affected by the cyclone.

As a part of that, ``Khurushkul Special Shelter Project'' was taken up in the financial year 2014-15 with the aim of rehabilitating the landless, homeless, uprooted and destitute people of Jalbadayu refugees of Cox's Bazar.

The project has been adopted in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the socio-economic development of the people of Cox's Bazar, a coastal region affected by cyclones and tidal waves. 4409 Jalbadayu refugee families will be resettled by constructing 139 multi-storey buildings with 5 floors under the scope of this project. Economic well-being of resettled families will be ensured.
