Dhaka and Tokyo sign eight agreements

Dhaka, April 26: Dhaka and Tokyo on Wednesday signed eight agreements on the second day of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's four-day state visit to Japan at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Concerned persons of the two friendly countries signed agreements on agriculture, metro rail, industrial development, ship recycling, customs matters, intellectual property, defense cooperation, ICT and cyber security cooperation.

Later, the agreements were exchanged between Bangladesh and Japan in the presence of the Prime Ministers of both countries at the Japanese Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo.

The first agreement is a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Agricultural Cooperation for Agricultural Research and Development and Capacity Building between the Ministry of Agriculture of Bangladesh and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan.

The second agreement is an agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh regarding cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters to ensure the proper application of customs laws. It aims to undertake cooperative efforts for the prevention, investigation and simplification and harmonization of customs procedures.

The third agreement is an MoC between the Ministry of Commerce of Bangladesh and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan to jointly explore the potential of Bangladesh's industrial upgrading by strengthening cooperation within Bangladesh to establish a framework on 'Bangladesh-Japan Industrial Upgrading Partnership Cooperation'.

The fourth agreement is the Memorandum on Defense Cooperation between the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Government of Japan to strengthen cooperation in defense dialogue, exchange of visits, education, training, courses, seminars, workshops, technology transfer and any other agreed activities relevant thereto.

The fifth agreement is – Cooperation in Metro Rail, Cooperation on Metro Rail Policy, Laws and Regulations, Technology for Infrastructure, Rolling Stock and Systems; Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan and the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges of Bangladesh in the field of safety policy and management and disaster prevention.

The sixth agreement is - Memorandum of Cooperation in Ship Recycling between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan and the Ministry of Industry of Bangladesh.

The eighth agreement is - MOC in the field of information and communication technology including cyber security between the ICT Department of Bangladesh, the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Before the signing of the agreement, bilateral talks were held between the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the Prime Minister of Japan in a very cordial atmosphere.
