MP Oath Dr. Pran Gopal Datta takes oath as Comilla 7 MP
Dhaka, October 1: Dr. Pran Gopal Datta was sworn in as a Member of Parliament from Comilla-7 (Chandina) constituency. On Thursday (September 30), in the oath-taking room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury administered the oath of office to the new MP, who won the by-election. Secretary of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat KM Abdus Salam conducted the event.
Jatiya Sangsad Whip Iqbalur Rahim, Whip Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan and Whip Mahbub Ara Begum Gini were present on the occasion. At the end of the swearing in, Pran Gopal Datta signed the oath book as per the custom.
Earlier, on September 20, a public notice was issued declaring Dr. Pran Gopal Datta elected unopposed.
According to reports, two of the three valid candidates withdrew their nominations. As the sole candidate, there was no need of a vote on October 7. September 19 was the last day for withdrawal of nominations. Jatiya Party and NAP candidates withdrew their nomination papers and the next day Datta was declared the sole candidate.
The Comilla-7 (Chandina) seat became vacant on July 30 after the death of five-time Member of Parliament and former Deputy Speaker Professor Ali Ashraf.
