Durga Puja begins today, no security concerns: DMP Commissioner

Dhaka, Oct 20: Sharadiya Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindus, begins with the invocation of the demon-slaying goddess Durga, the symbol of motherhood and strength. Through Mahalaya, the goddess entered the mortal world, and the Durga puja has begun through Mahashasthi today.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that there is no security threat during the autumn Durga festival ahead of the elections. All necessary security measures have been taken. He said this after visiting Dhakeshwari National Temple in Old Dhaka of the capital on Thursday.

The commissioner said that there are 248 places of worship in the Dhaka metropolitan area. Adequate measures have been taken for the security of these mandapas. From Mahalaya till today there was a kind of security system. The main activities of the five-day puja will begin tomorrow. Security activities will be conducted with the help of police Ansar along with the volunteer team from Mahasashti to Bisarjan.

He said that the police have also kept people in civilian clothes. We have had several meetings with the organizers. We hope to be able to complete the program very nicely in the next five days.

In response to a question whether there is any kind of apprehension in celebrating Puja in view of the upcoming elections, he said that there is no specific apprehension in the Dhaka metropolitan area on the occasion of Puja. But our plans are designed keeping in mind all kinds of threats and we are prepared to face all kinds of threats.

He said about the surrender within the stipulated time, we have told everyone in the meeting that we can complete the surrender within the stipulated time and everyone will try to keep any kind of problem.

Dhaka Metropolitan Puja Celebration Committee President Monindra Kumar Nath, General Secretary Ramen Mondal, Additional Commissioner of DMP and senior officers of DMP were present.
