EU congratulates Sheikh Hasina, commits to take the relationship to new heights

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 18 January 2024: The European Union (EU) has congratulated Sheikh Hasina on being elected Prime Minister for the fourth consecutive term. At the same time, the EU has promised to take the partnership and cooperation with Bangladesh to new heights. Ambassador Charles Whiteley said this during a courtesy call on Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister's official residence on Thursday morning.

Quoting Whiteley, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Md. Noor Elahi Mina said, "Under the Global Gateway facility, Bangladesh's existing benefits in various sectors including environment, good governance, renewable energy and transportation will be strengthened in the coming days."

In this context, he said, the EU has given 407 million euros to Bangladesh at the Global Gateway Forum conference held recently in Brussels, Belgium. The EU ambassador pledged to continue the facilities provided to Bangladesh under the Everything But Arms (EBA) facility. He also promised to provide GSP plus facility to Bangladesh.

The EU ambassador also appreciated the initiatives taken by the Sheikh Hasina government for the development of disabled and marginalized people. In the meeting, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh expressed satisfaction over the relations between his country and the European Union in the last 50 years.

Sheikh Hasina said that this relationship between Bangladesh and the European Union will rise to a new height.

The Prime Minister thanked the EU for its continued support under the EBA and sought further cooperation in various sectors including renewable energy under the Global Gateway programme.
