EU delegation seeks assurance of fair elections: Obaidul Quader

Dhaka, July 15: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the European Union (EU) delegation visiting Bangladesh has sought assurance of fair elections. He said this after the Awami League meeting with the EU delegation at the Sheraton Hotel in Banani of the capital on Saturday (July 15).

Obaidul Quader said, "They have asked for assurance of fair elections. They want to see good elections in Bangladesh. We have also promised. They have been assured of reforming the electoral system."

When asked about BNP, he said, "I don't want to have any debate with them. I have not talked to them (EU delegation) on any issue of dialogue or caretaker government. I do not accept anything related to elections outside the constitution."

Earlier, the pre-election observer delegation of the European Union held a meeting with the Awami League at 12 noon. The meeting was led by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Farooq Khan, Information Minister Dr. Hashan Mahmud, Ambassador Mohammad Zamir, party's International Affairs Secretary Dr. Shammi Ahmed, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua, Information and Research Secretary Dr. Salim participated in the meeting. Mahmoud, Mohammad A. Arafat, and Tarana Halim.

On the other hand, there were five members of the European Union delegation led by Riccardo Chellari.

A team of six members of the European Union, headed by Ricardo Chellari, arrived in Dhaka early Sunday morning to assess the environment for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Members of the delegation will remain in Dhaka till July 23. During this time, the delegation will talk to representatives of the government, political parties, election commission, security officials, civil society and media.
