Dhaka, May 10: European Union (EU) Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley said that there is no intention to mediate or interfere in the internal politics of Bangladesh.

He said that they have come to meet and listen to all political parties to understand the situation.

Addressing a press conference on the occasion of European Day at a hotel in the city on Tuesday (May 9) afternoon, he further said, "We are not here (Bangladesh) to mediate or interfere in internal politics."

The ambassador said the EU wants to see "free and fair" elections in Bangladesh without any violence, as all Bangladeshis want the same. The ambassador made this comment in response to a question about the upcoming national elections in Bangladesh. Ambassadors from other EU countries also attended the briefing.

Whiteley said the EU would send an exploratory election observation mission in July. The EU has already received a written invitation from the Election Commission of Bangladesh. The High Command of the European Commission will decide whether to send an election observation mission of the European Union during the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh.
