Dhaka, Jan 4: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and member of the party's Standing Committee Mirza Abbas have been granted interim bail for six months in a case filed at Paltan police station on charges of planning and inciting attacks on the police.

Lawyers said that there is no obstacle to their release as there is no further case against them. At the same time, the court wanted to know why they will not be given permanent and regular bail. The concerned have to respond to this rule within the next four weeks.

On Tuesday (January 3), a bench comprising Justice Md. Salim and Justice Md. Riaz Uddin Khan of the High Court gave this order after hearing the matter.

Advocate Zainul Abedin was the senior lawyer in the hearing for the bail application in the court. Additional Attorney General SM Moniruzzaman Monir was present at the state hearing.

Meanwhile, additional attorney general SM Moniruzzaman Monir said that an appeal will be filed against the bail order.

Advocate AJ Muhammad Ali, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister Badruddoza Badal, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus, AJ Bhuiyan, Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Advocate Sagir Hossain Lyon and more than 100 pro-BNP lawyers appeared for the petitioners in the court.

These two top BNP leaders applied for bail in the High Court after failing to seek bail four times in the judicial (lower) court. A bail application was made on their behalf in the relevant branch of the High Court on Monday.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge rejected the interim bail application of Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas in the judicial court on December 21. But the two top leaders of BNP could not apply for bail in the high court as the certified copy of the order was not received by the lawyer through the appropriate authority.
