Fakhrul Islam's statement is against the norms of democracy: Obaidul Quader

Dhaka, February 13, 2022: Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader has said that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's statement regarding formation of current Election Commission, new search committee and Election Commission is against the norms and values of democracy. This was stated in a statement on Saturday.

In a statement, Obaidul Quader termed the statement of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as "intentionally poisonous and absurd" and said that a case and trial should be filed against the current Election Commission (EC) for destroying the electoral system in Bangladesh.

Obaidul Quader said such statements are against the norms and values of democracy. The Election Commission is not just a constitutional body, it is like a regulatory body or referee for all political parties in Bangladesh. If a team plays poorly in a game, in many cases they blame the referee. The situation of BNP is much the same. It has become their habit to blame the referee for losing or not participating in the game.

He said, ‘As part of a pre-planned conspiracy, the BNP did not participate in the election or tried to question the election; The BNP will have to take the responsibility if there is any obstruction in the proper discharge of the responsibilities of the Election Commission. As a registered political party, we think that legal action should be taken against the BNP for poisoning the Election Commission without regard for democratic norms. '

The general secretary of the Awami League said, "We have to remember that according to the law, the election commission represents the state."

The country's highest legal constitution recognizes the Election Commission as an independent body. Every decision of this commission is a state decision. Therefore, such disrespectful treatment of the Election Commission is unconstitutional.

Someone may be offended against an organization or authority. But he has a systematic way of expressing resentment. Without going that route, such a special attack on the constitutional institution is a blow to the foundations of the state, society and democratic politics.
