Dhaka, Jan 18: A court has granted bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case of sabotage filed at the capital's Paltan police station, and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the party's standing committee, in two cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tahmina Haque gave this order after the court hearing on Wednesday.

Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Alamgir Hossain, officer of general registration wing of Paltan police station, confirmed the matter in the court. Their lawyer Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah told Dhaka Post that a total of 11 cases were filed against Mirza Fakhrul after October 28 last year. Among them, he got bail in 10 cases related to today. He is in jail in another case. Which is currently pending in the Appellate Division. I hope that he will be released from prison after getting bail in that case very soon.

He also said that the court granted bail in two of the 10 cases in the name of Amir Khusroo Mahmud. The bail hearing in the remaining 8 cases is on Thursday. If the court grants his bail, there will be no further bar to his release.

Earlier, on December 14, investigating officer Paltan Model Police Sub-Inspector Sumit Kumar applied to remand Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury for 10 days in the case. Later, on December 18, in the presence of the accused, their arrest in this case was shown. In addition, the court refused remand and ordered two days of interrogation in jail.

Police clashed with BNP leaders and workers in Kakrail from noon on October 28, before the start of BNP's general meeting in Nayapaltan of the capital. After that, clashes spread to Vijayanagar water tank and Shantinagar area. At one point, the BNP's general meeting broke up at around 3 o'clock. A member of the police and a ward-level leader of Jubo Dal were killed in this clash. 41 police and 25 members of Ansar were injured. Besides, at least 20 journalists were injured.
