FAO regional conference commences in Dhaka

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, March 8: The 36th Regional Conference of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) began today (Tuesday, March 8) in Dhaka. The four-day conference will be attended by agriculture ministers, agriculture secretaries and government and non-government officials from 46 countries in Asia and the Pacific regions.

Agriculture Minister Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak said this at a press conference at the Secretariat on Monday (March 7).

He said the conference will be held from March 8 to 11. This conference is a source of pride for Bangladesh. Due to Corona pandemic, this time the conference will be in hybrid format (direct and virtual). So far, 900 members from 43 member nations, the Director General of the FAO, representatives of various UN bodies, development partners, NGOs and civil society have registered to take part in it. The conference will be attended by 42 esteemed members of Prime Minister, Ministers and State Ministers of the member countries.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Bangladesh became a member of the FAO in 1973. The first regional conference was held in 1953 in Bangalore, India. This time the main session of the conference will be held at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka and the opening ceremony and country showcasing will be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center.

He further said that the current situation of food and agriculture in Asia and the Pacific region, what needs to be done to develop climate resilient agriculture and food system in the region, acceleration of agriculture value chain digitization, economic cooperation and joint investment will be discussed at this conference.

A meeting of senior officials, agriculture secretaries and senior government officials will be held on March 8 and 9 for the first two days of the conference, and a meeting of agriculture minister level will be held on March 10 and 11 at Bangabandhu International Conference Center.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the conference. There will be country showcasing at 17 stalls at Hotel Intercontinental and Bangabandhu International Conference Center.
