Fishermen resume catching fish in rivers after overcoming fear of cyclone

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, May 13: Fishermen are going to catch fish in groups with boats and trawlers after overcoming the fear of cyclone 'Asani'. On Thursday (May 12) afternoon, they went to the river to catch fish with various fishing equipment.

In the Bhola canal of Shibpur union of Bhola Sadar upazila and Tulatali area of Dhania union, fishermen were seen in groups rushing into the river with fishing equipment including nets, boats, trawlers and fishing boards.

Md. Taslim Majhi, a fisherman from Bhola canal area, said, “Five days ago we went to hunt hilsa. Our family members called on Tuesday to inform us about the cyclone. Later we came ashore. On Thursday afternoon, 17 of us are going to hunt hilsa again."

Md. Firoz Majhi, a fisherman from Dhania Tulatuli area, said, “I have come to Meghna river with fishing equipment including trawlers and nets since this afternoon. I left the net till 4-6 pm and got four hilsas weighing about 500 grams. Later I took them to Tulatali fishing ground and sold them for Tk 1,600."

Md. Manju Islam, a trader of Tulatli fishing ghat, said that in the afternoon, some fishermen caught hilsa and brought it to the ghat for sale. Buyers and sellers are gathering again at the fishing ghat.

Bhola District Fisheries Officer SM Azharul Islam said that the fishermen of seven upazilas of Bhola have started fishing again. To avoid accidents, administration is doing public miking on the fishing ghats and river banks, and informing fishermen by broadcasting bulletins via 'Meghna' radio.
