Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 22: The flood situation in five northern districts has worsened in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning, though the flow of water from upstream has slightly decreased. More than two lakh people have so far been affected in the Brahmaputra river basin.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said water from major rivers were flowing over the danger level at 10 points in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts at 9 am on Tuesday. During this time the water levels of the major rivers have risen relatively low and some low lying areas have been newly flooded. At the same time Dharla flowed over 42 cm of danger level at Kurigram point and 37 cm above Ghagote at Gaibandha point.

The Brahmaputra is flowing 23 cm above the danger level at Nunkhawa point, 107 cm above at Hatia point, 57 cm above at Chilmari point and 58 cm above the danger level at Fulchhari point. In Bahadurabad, the Jamuna is flowing 55 cm above the danger level. At 9 am, it was flowing in Sariakandi's Kazipur and Sirajganj points at 50 cm and 49 cm above the danger level respectively.

Due to low water level in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning, Dudhkumar in Pateshwari is flowing at 16 cm below danger level, Teesta at Dalia at 10 cm below danger level and 10 cm below danger level at Kaunia Point.

According to a bulletin from the BWBD's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the recorded rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 9 am today was 164 mm at Cherrapunji and 57 mm at Pasighat Point in north-east India.

Heavy rainfall is unlikely in the next 24 hours inside Bangladesh and upstream of various neighbouring states of India.

The bulletin further said, "The flood situation in Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jamalpur districts may remain stable and the flood situation in Bogra, Sirajganj and Tangail districts may worsen in the next 24 hours."
