Own correspondent, Dhaka, 18 February 2021: Corona vaccination program has started in the country at the beginning of this month. Only registered Bangladeshi citizens are covered under this facility.

This benefit has not been extended to anyone other than foreign diplomats. Meanwhile, foreigners staying in the country are requesting the foreign ministry to vaccinate them. The foreign ministry is planning a meeting to decide on the matter.

An official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who did not want to be named, told the Bengali Tribune that there were some problems in vaccinating foreigners. To get vaccinated, one has to register and in the process of registration, it is mandatory to give the number of national identity card, which foreigners do not have. Besides, the government does not have accurate information about how many foreigners are staying in the country now. As a result, planning is a bit difficult.

He said it was being given free of cost to Bangladeshis but no decision had been taken on whether money would be taken for foreigners. Foreign students are also interested in getting vaccinated but it will be difficult to get them vaccinated. Because, currently people over 40 years of age are being vaccinated.

The official said the matter would be resolved in consultation with all concerned to take a decision. In this situation, the official thinks that it is best if foreigners come through the embassy located in Bangladesh.
The government is providing free vaccinations to about 1,200 diplomats stationed in Bangladesh. In addition, Bangladesh has requested permission from Russia to send vaccines made in that country for its citizens.
