Dhaka, May 16: Former mayor of Gazipur Mohammad Jahangir Alam has been permanently expelled from Awami League. Party secretary Biplab Barua confirmed this information on Monday evening. Earlier on Sunday afternoon at the Awami League president's political office in Dhanmondi, there was a demand for the permanent expulsion of Jahangir Alam in the meeting of the editorial board of the party.

Jahangir Alam was expelled from the post of General Secretary of Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League for insulting Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was also dismissed from the primary membership of Awami League. Later, Jahangir Alam was also pardoned on the condition of not breaking the organization's order and activities against the interests of the organization in the future.

Meanwhile, Azmat Ulla Khan, Jahangir Alam and 17 leaders of Awami League and its affiliated organizations were candidates for the post of mayor in the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation elections. But advocate Azmat Ulla Khan, the president of the metropolitan Awami League, got the nomination of Awami League.

Not getting the party nomination, Jahangir Alam said in a response, "If the citizens and voters of the area want it, I will not disappoint them." I will choose if they want. I will only elect the post of mayor if the people want.

Later Jahangir's nomination was canceled due to default. However, fearing that his nomination may be cancelled, he also nominated his mother for the post of mayor. Now he is campaigning loudly for his mother. The seat is becoming dangerous for Awami League in this kind of activity.

In September 2021, an audio of Jahangir Alam went viral on social media. In that audio Jahangir Alam can be heard taunting 3 million people martyred in the liberation war and Bangabandhu. In this incident, he was expelled from the party on November 19 of that year. Later, he was temporarily suspended from the post of mayor of Gazipur City Corporation on November 25 due to several complaints.
