Former lawmaker arrested over Pallabi murder

Dhaka, May 20: The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested MA Awal, a former Member of Parliament (MP) of Laxmipur-1 constituency and chairman of the Islami Ganatantrik Party, for publicly hacking to death a young man named Shahin Uddin (33) in the capital's Pallabi.

According to RAB, Md. Awal, the number one accused in the murder case, was arrested on Thursday from Bhairab area in Pallabi of the capital for brutally hacking his father in front of a child.

On May 16, Shahin Uddin was hacked to death by miscreants in front of a seven-year-old child on Road No. 31, Section 12, Pallabi. Aklima Begum, the victim's wife, filed a murder case against 20 people, including former Laxmipur MP MA Awal. Police arrested one person the day after the incident.

According to the case file, two youths named Sumon and Titu called Shaheen Uddin at 4 pm on May 16 to settle the land dispute.

When Shaheen reached the front of the house No. 40 on Road No. 31 in D-Block of Pallabi on a motorcycle, 14/15 people including Sumon and Titu dragged him to the garage of the house. At that time, Shaheen's seven-year-old son Mashrafe was outside the gate. They put him in the garage and beat him randomly with chapatis, Chinese axes and machetes. Then they took him out of the house, hacked him in front of the house and left him there.

Aklima Begum, the mother of the deceased, alleged that Shaheen was killed by local terrorists in a land dispute with MA Awal, MD of Haveli Properties Developers Limited and former MP of Laxmipur-2 constituency, in Alinagar residential area of ​​Burirtek in Section-12 of Pallabi. He was killed for obstructing the forcible occupation of 10 acres of land worth about five crore rupees.
