Forty orphan girls get married at Dinajpur mass wedding

Dhaka, May 28: A post-wedding reception has been given to 40 orphan girls who grew up in Dinajpur Shishu Niketan. They were given a reception at noon on Friday (May 27) at the Greenview Community Center in Balubari, Dinajpur.

Jatiya Sangsad Whip Iqbalur Rahim was present on the occasion. Among others Deputy Commissioner Khaled Mohammad Zaki, Chief Executive Officer of the District Council Zainul Abedin, President of Dinajpur Chamber of Commerce and Industries Reza Humayun Faruk Chowdhury Shamim, President of Shishu Niketan Steering Committee Mozaffar Ali Milon were present.

At the end of the reception, one bicycle for the groom, one sewing machine for the bride and household items were given. Earlier in the day, the bride and groom arrived at the community center dressed up.

According to Shishu Niketan sources, the last time 20 orphan girls of Shishu Niketan were married together in 2019. Since then, it has not been possible to get married together because of pandemic. The residents of Shishu Niketan, established in 1979, were officially married off after completing 18 years of age up to HSC. So far, 174 daughters of Shishu Niketan have been married off.

The Lions Club manages the Shishu Niketan Home located in the Phulbari bus stand area of ​​the city. Besides handicrafts, 101 orphans were given handicrafts, sewing and computer training. Of these, 40 orphan girls were married off in a festive atmosphere on Friday. The 40 were residents of different districts and upazilas including Dinajpur. Some of the potters are traders, some work in garment factories and some work in agriculture or workshops.

Abdur Razzak of Boaldar village in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur has a tailor shop. He has married Liza Akhter, an orphan girl of Shishu Niketan Home without any dowry. He said, "Today, 40 brothers like me have set an example by marrying orphan girls without dowry. I wish all the best and pray so that we can be happy."

Mozaffar Ali Milon, president of the organizing Shishu Niketan, said that girls are married off from Shishu Niketan every year. This time 40 orphan girls have been married together. They have been given bicycles, sewing machines and other necessities of life.
