Dhaka, October 13: State Minister for Housing and Public Works Sharif Ahmed has laid the foundation stone of Bangabandhu Square in the capital's new city Purbachal on Monday.

Speaking as the chief guest at the ground breaking ceremony of the construction work, the state minister said the installation would play a special role in presenting the true history of the liberation war to the younger generation and the unique role of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the war.

He said Bangabandhu means Bangladesh. The nation will forever remember with gratitude his unique role in the movement for an independent sovereign state and the realisation of the rights of Bengalis in the name of Bangladesh on the world map. This Bangabandhu Square will serve as a tangible symbol of presenting Bangabandhu's ideals and deeds to people of all classes and professions, including children and teenagers in the Purbachal New Town area.

After the program, the state minister said in response to a question from reporters, Bangabandhu has been agitating for the establishment of the rights of the common man all his life. Following in her footsteps, her worthy daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina devoted herself to the welfare of the country and its people.

The government is giving utmost importance to the rehabilitation of the affected people in the Purbachal New Town project area. All activities in Purbachal will be implemented after ensuring their rehabilitation, said Sharif Ahmed.

On the occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the 'National Implementation Committee to Celebrate the Birth Centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman' adopted a plan to set up Bangabandhu Square in the Purbachal New City Project area.

In view of this, the main responsibility for taking necessary steps for the establishment of Bangabandhu Square was entrusted to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

The Ministry of Housing and Public Works entrusted the construction of Bangabandhu Square to the Capital Development Authority. The original design was prepared by the Department of Architecture.

The artistic style of the historic speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 7 has been highlighted in its original design.

The historic installation is being constructed on 2.319 acres of land at Plot No. 18, Road No. 203, Sector 15, Purbachal New Town Project.

The total cost of its construction will be 55 crore one lakh 64 thousand rupees.

In the historic speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 7, the bronze sculpture of his index finger raised in the air will be adorned in Bangabandhu Square.
